[Personality]

When first seen in the series Alibaba appears to be a cunning cart driver, who seemingly does everything he can to avoid trouble but also to achieve his goal – which at that time was going to the Dungeon in order to gain incredible riches that were lying in the treasure room of it. Alibaba was shown to be able to control his own anger well and to be able to tell a convincing lie. For instance, when the wine vendor Budel insulted him and made fun of his dreams, he only laughed and agreed with the vendor, even though Alibaba was actually angry. He also convinced Aladdin at first that they were friends only to make the boy accompany him to the Dungeon. Alibaba thought that with help of Aladdin’s Djinn they have bigger chance to actually conquer the Dungeon.

First appearances can be misleading though. Alibaba, even despite things he did, always tried to earn money with hard work. As cunning as he is, he can’t lie or deceive people for too long. While he was lying to Aladdin and calling him his friend only to make him go to the Dungeon together he eventually truly began to consider the boy a friend. Alibaba doesn’t mean harm to anyone either and while he can control himself when someone’s is joking or insulting him and his dreams he can’t stand to see how other people suffer because of those who have power. Alibaba couldn’t just look when a little girl was in danger, almost eaten by a man-eating plant that attacked Alibaba’s cart. He jumped to save her without a second thought, not even caring for his own life. He also punched the wine vendor, who didn’t care about the girl and was only thinking about how to save his wine, even going as far as to offer the child’s mother money so she would forget about the girl. That angered Alibaba incredibly.

Alibaba even later on in the series at first glance comes off as irresponsible, carefree, frivolous, happy-go-lucky idiot and might even seem childish in some ways. He likes getting praise and look cool in front of others. He also smiles a lot and is quick to complement beautiful women. He comes of as a bit stubborn, too. He isn’t good at dealing with awkward situation either, such as when he becomes angry with Aladdin when it turns out that the boy decided that he wants to study magic and Alibaba can’t go with him. In the end the situation made it hard for Alibaba talk to his friends again to the point that he didn’t know how to go to them to tell them that in the end he’ll be traveling on the same ship as them.

Alibaba is truly a kind and caring person who can be very reliable when you need him. He is also an extremely loyal friend. Even though he was betrayed by Kassim (his childhood friend) and later on even was forced to fight him he never even for a moment stopped thinking of him as a friend or even as a family member. Once he makes friends with someone, Alibaba wants to believe in them to the very end and tries to do everything he can to help them. He was devastated after Kassim’s death.

Another thing is that Alibaba is far more intelligent, knowledgeable and skilled than he appears. It is a fact that he was raised in the slums and thanks to that he experienced the hardships of life early on in his life. Later on however he was taken to the palace, when it turned out that his father was actually the king of Balbadd. In the palace he was trained in sword fighting and gained vast knowledge in different subjects as well as knowledge of an ancient language of Toran.

Whenever faced with a problem, Alibaba tries to come up with the best solution possible. Even in the most dire situation he doesn’t want to give up, such as what to do about Balbadd’s problem with monarchy that literally sold the country to the Kou empire and in result caused the poor citizens of Balbadd to suffer greatly. Since the country was at the stake of a war between the citizens and monarchy, Alibaba came to the conclusion that it would be best if the country was returned to people, creating the republic of Balbadd and preventing a bloody revolution (almost, since thanks to Kassim things got worse).

It should be noted that Alibaba changes during the series. At first he is convinced that he is merely a coward that just keeps running away from his responsibly as the prince of Balbadd. Making friends with Aladdin and Morgiana made him stronger and gave him courage to change and return to his country to try and fix the situation in there. Yet when Aladdin and Morgiana reunion with him eventually, he pushed them away. He firmly believed that it was only his responsibility, and he should be the one to fix the problem. He didn’t want help form anyone else. It shows that he can take all the responsibility and risk on himself. At the same time, even though he knows that the problem might be too complicated for him to solve it alone he doesn’t want help for one more reason. Constantly receiving help makes him lose his confidence and he starts feeling helpless, weak and unable to do anything.

Eventually Alibaba realizes how foolish he is to always wanting to deal with everything alone; he realizes that only together with others he is able to change something. He also wants other to realize that too. When Hakuryuu starts acting the same way Alibaba did before, he tells him that he is wrong and should let the others help.

Despite being intelligent and very cunning Alibaba is surprisingly oblivious and even naïve when it comes to other people. He doesn’t realize that he’s being manipulated by Kassim or Sinbad, simply blindly believing in their good intentions. All his belongings were stolen by the people that he thought he saved from thieves, only because he was praised by them and carelessly accepted their invitation for a drink. It really doesn’t take him much to start thinking of someone that maybe they aren’t a bad person. He’s a very friendly person himself and makes friends with people easily, even if they started off as enemies or were from enemy countries. He makes friends with Kogyouku and Hakuryuu despite the fact that their country was the reason for Balbadd’s suffering. Yet Alibaba simply says to Hakuryuu that he doesn’t have any reason to hate him, because it isn’t his fault. In Kogyouku’s case, Alibaba could relate to her, because their family’s situations were similar.

On top of that Alibaba clearly wants to look the best in eyes of his friends and he is greatly depressed after he overhears what they “think” about him when he is hiding on the ship, sure that his friends don’t know he’s there. Later it turned out that they knew he was there and simply played a prank on him, but for a moment he is still shown to be angry with them because of that. Not for too long though.

Alibaba is also shown to think more of people around him than of himself and wanting to save everyone. He wishes to become stronger in order to be of more help to others as well as to help his country.
